Ethics in Graphic Design

As a graphic designer there are certain ways to conduct yourself whether dealing with clients or other designers. When dealing with clients don’t over promise, this will save your image later. When you over promise and fail, the client might never forgive you easily, the trick is to under promise and over deliver. This way you surprise them and they will be happy with you.

Be Honest

Don’t lie to be an expert in a field you don’t qualify, avoid being greedy and wait for the appropriate opportunity. When work which is not your scope comes your way, don’t take it and figure out later by googling and you tubing; always link it to a professional and get finders fee instead. It’s more worth, will save the client time and money and even your image

Be Proactive

Always communicate about your progress, don’t keep silent and all of a sudden give a proposal, it’s not magic involve your client all the way. Keep your work transparent as possible. The client should also be cooperative by providing timely feedback, when dealing with a busy client schedule with them dates for feedback and if they are not available they assign representatives.

Be Inquisitive

Ask the right questions, in fact ask all questions you need to know about the project never assume anything before starting the project. Clear your kick start by clarifying on the basics like the time-frame, the budget and scope of the design. This will give you a bigger picture of the project and will minimize a lot of back and forth with the client. After you are done make sure you document all the necessary information and keep them safe.

Be kind and Professional

In your tone even when disagreeing, remember you are the image of your business and how you behave matters a lot. Accept rejections humbly even if it cost you a lot to get them drafted and delivered to the prospects. This will always happen, learn how to overcome your ego and solve the problem up front. Harsh criticism and bad comment should not delude you to self pity, use the third eye and see the criticism without attaching anything personal. That’s how we learn and grow.

Control your Impulse

Have you got a call from your girlfriend or mom and you want to end the meeting immediately? Do friends reschedule your appointments and you go out to party? If this is and has been happening to you you need to master your emotions and decisions, continue on this lane and clients will take you as either childish or confused. Keep friends and family to motivate you and when the need comes, keep them away to be productive. Sometimes it happens and you feel like not in control then meditate and learn how to listen to your inner self, before you act count 1, 2 . 3 at least to let some sense sink in.

Other ethics and ethos can be borrowed from other professionals: like courtesy, respect, gratitude a simple thank you and dressing in a manner that portrays what you are up to. Know how to say NO, yes is not always an answer, nodding and agreeing with everything makes you look stupid not interested. A case where the client does not sign the agreement, does not fill the brief or pay the down payment, insist they do so. If they still ignore you then play it safe and don’t do business with them. Always include the V.A.T and file returns to avoid any legal mitigation.

Lastly, love what you do and do what you love, there is time for everything, always get good sleep, remember you are paid to think and your brain is your number one arsenal. Never be cheap or work for free, know yourself know your worth.

Does Drawing Make You a Better Graphic Designer?

Not necessarily, Graphic Design involves much thinking and imagination, the better thinker you are the better designer you become. After collecting a brief, do concept mapping( Mind Mapping ) then some quick sketches. Here the drawing plays a big role in saving time and resources. When you rush to design in Illustrator or whatever software, chances are it might not be the best visual solution for the brief and therefore the process becomes iterative and tedious. Its more tedious to design on the computer than with pencil and paper! Drawing has special advantages that you cannot ignore. It is quick ➹➹   compared to the very fast computer 8th Generation i7. Drawing captures imagination, concepts at the speed of thought does not require power and can be achieved anywhere. A pen and a blank paper are the simplest User Interface with very little distraction that's why you become more creative and productive than when on a software. Drawing is like recording all the concepts you co...

About LOUD'SIGN Studio

Imagination is the key; and am an avid daydreamer. I started this company out of many trials and errors; what has kept me going is the ardent Passion I have for Art and Design. To cut my long story short I started as a musician in Lenana School (2007 : Form Two) where I spent almost all my class hours writing lyrics; they thought I was crazy but I got encouraged by my English teacher. Finishing Lenana School I went to Shang tao Media Arts College (2010) to further my interest in music; I did not finish my higher diploma because I dropped out for a Record Label known as Trakali (2011). The lifestyle of the studio owners did not appease me, I checked out and started a small venture: a game shop where I made a few shillings then decided to get serious and went to Kenya Methodist University  (2013) to do Bachelors of Business Information College. On 2016 I dropped out again to pursue my interests in graphic design. Here I am now am not going to quit this one this is...

Minimalism vs dADaiSm

Minimalism is the principle of less is more while dadaism is no rules at all. I don’t advocate for one principle over the other, choose what will work best for your project. Let’s say you are designing road signs, dadaism is definitely not the way to go, if its an artistic poster that needs to express some spirit then minimalism won’t do the best for the job. It’s always wise to choose what fits your project, pa-harps you don’t need to stick to the two principles alone you might try so much on your own even merging the two. History repeats itself and I have observed from Meggs Parvis book: “ History of Graphic Design“ that whenever there is an explosion(innovation) it’s highly embraced until it’s overused, then a relief comes by to save Graphic Design. In our time Minimalism has really been on the forefront and this is due to plethora of information loaded every where, so companies need smooth and quick ways to get to their audience. Screens have grown smaller, therefore there is...
